AMEL Institute Spring 2023

We are thrilled to announce that the AMEL Institute is now offering a Spring program and that applications to be part of this cohort are now being accepted!

The AMEL Institute is a unique online training program for young leaders, activists, and human rights defenders from anywhere in the Middle East & Africa. The Institute is designed to further build the skills and deepen the knowledge of young change-makers (18-35 years old) so that they can apply their activism in more efficient ways, while respecting human rights for all and protecting their own safety. Starting in April 2023, the Institute’s Spring program will run for 7 weeks and is completely free for accepted participants. The unique online program combines lectures, quizzes and assignments with live discussions and other interactive opportunities to build networks among like-minded activists from the region. Trainees also have the chance to participate in Q&A sessions with renowned international experts (e.g. from Harvard and Stanford universities) and to earn certificates of completion or distinction.

The training focuses on the topics of:

  • Human rights and gender parity;

  • Safety and self-care for activists, including on- and off-line security and mental health;

  • Genocide history and prevention, including Holocaust education and allyship to interrupt cycles leading to genocide;

  • Conflict transformation, peace and nonviolent movements;

  • Democracy and democratic development;

  • Communication for Activism, including storytelling, videomaking and public speaking.

The program aims to empower the young generation of activists who are addressing gaps in the human rights and democracy landscapes and working towards more open, safe and thriving societies in the Middle East and Africa. By the end of the program, activists gain knowledge and skills that are critical to becoming more safe and effective in their activism and create cross-border networks for experience sharing and mutual support. Activists learn - both from trainers and from one another - practical ways to step up their change-making locally and nationally, while creating momentum for human rights, pluralism and democracy regionally and globally.
